Speakers

Dr Deborah Cohen
Dr Deborah Cohen is a Senior Visiting Fellow at LSE Health and an award-winning, medically qualified broadcaster, journalist and author. She trained as a doctor before moving into investigative journalism and health reporting, describing herself as an "escapee medic". At The BMJ, she founded and led the investigations unit, using data analysis and forensic reporting to expose serious issues in medicine and health policy. She later served as Science Editor at ITV News and as a UK & Health Correspondent for BBC Newsnight, including during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her investigative work spans major programmes including BBC Panorama, Channel 4 Dispatches, ITV Tonight and BBC's File on Four, and has spurred changes in clinical practice, regulatory reform and parliamentary inquiries. Her reporting has also fed into global investigations and Netflix documentaries. Deborah is the author of 'Bad Influence: How the Internet Hijacked Our Health', on the commodification of health in an age of anxiety and why we can no longer distinguish medicine from marketing. As a speaker, she bridges medicine, journalism and policy, bringing deep expertise in navigating complexity, communicating science to broad audiences, and interrogating power in health and research.

Dr Nighat is a GP specialising in women's health, family planning and menopause care with over 18 years of experience in the NHS and she runs her own private practice. She is former Vice Chair of the BHIVA Pregnancy and HIV guidelines writing committee, and leads the writing of the HIV and infant feeding guidelines. Shema is currently writing her first non-fiction book for a general audience on the history of the vaginal speculum and what it tells us about contemporary women's healthcare (due for publication in Spring 2028).
